Alvin Cullum York, also known as Sergeant York, was one of the most beautifully decorated United States Army soldiers during World War I. He received the Medal of Honor for commanding an assault on a German machine gun chamber, collecting 35 machine guns, killing at least 25 enemies and capturing 132 prisoners. York's act of receiving the Medal of Honor occurred in the US-led portion of the Meuse-Argonne attack in France, which aimed to break through the Hindenburg Line and force the Germans to surrender . He obtained decorations from several allied countries during World War I, including France, Italy and Montenegro. York was born in rural Tennessee, in what is now the Pall Mall community in Fentress County. His parents are farmers and his father is a blacksmith. York's eleven children had minimal education as they helped the family, including hunting, fishing, and hired labor.
