A day after his 69th birthday, Tovey passed away on Tuesday in Barrington, Rhode Island, surrounded by his loved ones.

According to sources, the cause of death has been reported as cancer. Supporters and friends are grieving and paying tribute to the conductor.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the VSO School of Music’s president and CEO, Angela Elster, issued a statement.

Their statement read that the world has lost an incredible musician, Maestro, educator, activist, and giant of a human being. They also added that the VSO and the VSO School of Music are shattered and heartbroken.

Bramwell Tovey was married to Lana Penner-Tovey. The pair shared two daughters.

Tovey lived with his wife and children in Barrington, Rhode Island. The music director is survived by his family.

He also has a son named Ben from his previous marriage, which ended in divorce.

BBC Concert Orchestra posted a tribute that says, “It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Bramwell Tovey, our Principal Conductor, has died.” They also added that their thoughts are with his family and friends.

Bramwell Tovey Illness & Sarcoma

In 2019, Bramwell Tovey was initially diagnosed with a rare type of sarcoma.

He momentarily experienced cancer freedom following surgery in 2021, but the VSO reports that the illness reappeared in January.

Bramwell began his musical career with bands from the Salvation Army. Before beginning to conduct, he started playing the tuba and the piano.

His impact on British Columbia’s music, arts, and culture during his tenure as Music Director of the VSO was profound.

Tovey was a catalyst for change and a singular individual of intelligence, humor, compassion, and sincerity.
