Carolina Herrera’s close friend and the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue in 1981, Diana Vreeland, proposed that Carolina launch her own apparel line. She was inspired by this advice and continued to create samples in Caracas before making her debut at the prestigious Metropolitan Club in Manhattan.
After the collection received favorable reviews, a well-known Park Avenue retailer named Martha agreed to let her exhibit her works in their eye-catching windows.
Inspired by this early success, she returned to Caracas to collect the funds needed for an official launch. Iman, a future supermodel, took part in her 1980 runway debut. Presently, Carolina Herrera exhibits her ready-to-wear collection twice a year during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.
Since 1980, New York City has served as the company headquarters for Carolina Herrera. The business received significant recognition in 1981 because of articles in major publications like Women’s Wear Daily and Tatler that highlighted the exquisitely constructed sleeves of her garments.
Carolina has had the privilege of working with several prominent customers throughout the course of her career, including Renée Zellweger, Princess Diana, Duchess of Cadaval, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Carolina was commissioned to make the dress for Diana, Duchess of Cadaval’s wedding to Prince Charles-Philippe of Orléans, Duke of Anjou.

On January 8, 1939, Mara Carolina Josefina Pacanins y Nio was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Her parents were Mara Cristina Nio Passios and Guillermo Pacanins Acevedo, a former air force officer and governor of Caracas. Her grandmother, a renowned member of high society, introduced her to the fashion industry when she was a little child. Thanks to her grandmother’s indulgence, she would go to fashion shows by well-known designers like Balenciaga and have her closet filled with clothes from Lanvin and Dior. Carolina reflects on this event with joy, saying, “I became accustomed to seeing beautiful things through my own eyes.”
