Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt, commonly known as Chief Joseph, Young Joseph or Joseph the Younger, is a leader of the Wal-lam-wat-kain group of Nez Perce, a group of tribes Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest of the United States in the second half of the 19th century. He succeeded his father Tuekakas in the early 1870s. Joseph, team leader, led the Nez Percé group. In the most turbulent times in their history, when they were forcibly relocated. the land of their ancestors in the Wallowa Valley of northeastern Oregon in a greatly reduced sanctuary. A series of violent encounters with white settlers in the spring of 1877 culminated when Nez Perce resisted elimination, including Joseph's gang and a group of tribal allies. Palouse, fleeing the United States in an attempt for political asylum with the Lakota, who sought asylum in Canada under the leadership of Sit Bull.
