John Warren Geils Jr., known by his stage name J. Geils or Jay Geils, is an American guitarist. He is known as the leader of the J. Geils Band. Growing up in New York City, Geils developed an interest in jazz and blues. After moving to Massachusetts to attend college, he formed the Blues J. Geils Band while still a student at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. After removing the word "Blues" from their name, the band released their debut album in 1970, performing rock soul music and rhythm and blues influenced most of the 1970s before moving into pop music. in the 1980s. After the band split up in 1985, Geils regularly left the stage to enter the restaurant and car racing business, sometimes breaking into music production. He continued to appear on reunion tours with the rest of the group sporadically throughout the 2000s and 2010. He died of natural causes aged 71 on April 11, 2017, at his home in Groton, Massachusetts.
