“Jack” Casady (born April 13, 1944) is an American musician widely regarded as one of the finest bass guitarists of the rock music period. He is best recognised for his work as a founding member of the rock band Jefferson Airplane. Starting out as a lead guitarist in the Washington, D.C. area rhythm and blues band “The Triumphs,” he transitioned to bass during his high school years. While still underage (and using a fake identification), he performed in the Washington, D.C. club scene, backing artists such as Little Anthony and the Imperials, Ray Charles, and others.

He joined Jefferson Airplane in late September 1965 after being asked by lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, a high school classmate and former Triumphs rhythm guitarist, to join the band as bassist. As the first successful exponent of the San Francisco Sound, Jefferson Airplane established themselves as a musical pioneer. Their songs, which included “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit,” had a more polished approach and were popular at the top of the charts in 1967 and 1968 respectively. In 1996, Casady and the other members of Jefferson Airplane were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where they will remain until their deaths.
