Addison Mitchell McConnell Jr. is an American politician. As a member of the Republican Party, he served since 1985 as the United States Senator for Kentucky and since January 20, 2021, as the Minority Leader in the Senate, he previously held the same position from 2007 to 2015. He is also Senate Majority Leader from 2015 to 2021. He is married to former Transport Minister and former Labor Minister Elaine Chao. McConnell was first elected to the US Senate in 1984 and is the second Kentuckian to hold the position of party leader in the Senate. During the 1998 and 2000 election cycles, he served as chairman of the Republican National Senate Committee. He was elected by the majority of the whip at the 108th Congress and re-elected to this position in 2004. In November 2006, he was elected Senate Minority Leader - a position he held until the Republican party took control of the Senate in 2015 .
