Rajeev Masand Interview

It’s difficult to be friends with ex-lovers: Shahid

Rajeev Masand: What is with the six pack?

Shahid Kapoor: Though I haven’t really counted it, it wasn’t about getting a six or an eight pack for this film. The six-pack will be for a later film directed by Ken Ghosh, for which I will have a much more defined torso. For this film, it was about getting the body for Charlie because Charlie and Guddu are twins in Kaminey and both the characters need to look very different from each other. Charlie’s body is shown more than Guddu’s. Guddu’s body is more covered.

Rajeev Masand: There is a shot in the Kaminey trailer where you are running shirtless with white stallions. That particular shot can be credited with increasing your popularity. What sort of reactions have you got for that shot?

Shahid Kapoor: It’s amazing. Almost everyone that I’ve met seems to mention it. It was a shot, which Vishal (Vishal Bhardwaj) had in his mind very early. He discussed the shot with me quite early and he gave me almost a year to get ready for the shot. A lot of hard work went into the shot and I think it’s come out really well.

Rajeev Masand: Could you run as fast as the stallions?

Shahid Kapoor: You think? No way, I was a hundred feet ahead of them and they would still get ahead of me in five seconds.

Rajeev Masand: Vishal recently took a crack at you. He said Shahid should stop concentrating on his hair, make-up, and muscles and he would be a better actor?

Shahid Kapoor: We are all in a very Kamina (mean) frame of mind these days. Well, my response to that is I quite like my hair and thankfully I have some. Secondly, it was his idea to get the hair extensions on, so he shouldn’t be complaining. Jokes apart, Vishal and I have a relationship where we can be honest with each other. I always tell Vishal that you are an art director and I’m a commercial hero so he should take care of the art and I’ll take care of the commerce. He always says these things in jest and I get back at him.

Rajeev Masand: Actors spend a lot of time trying to enhance this appearance, do you think actors spend the same amount of time owning their performances?

Shahid Kapoor: There was a time when an actor changed his/her look it was considered as good as a performance. But that misconception is going away now. For me, personally being a combination of a star and an actor is challenging. Only being a star or only being an actor is easy, as that way you need to brush up your skills in one territory. But when you want to be both, it’s difficult as you are in two different territories together and merging them is the difficult part.

I do believe looks are an important part of being a mainstream hero. It’s getting more lenient as people are opening up to people playing roles, which aren’t glamorous. I believe that I would like to work on myself in totality.

Rajeev Masand: Tell us one thing about Shahid Kapoor that no one knows?

Shahid Kapoor: I had a slip-disc in my neck about a year back and didn’t tell anyone about it. I’m good now but I had a tough time for about a month or so.

Rajeev Masand: In Kaminey, were their challenges playing your first double-role apart from the facts that the two have different looks and that one of them has a lisp and the other stammers?

Shahid Kapoor: The most challenging part was that we shot them together and didn’t get a chance to finish one character at a time. It was difficult because we were swapping them every day and the two have different speech impairments. We didn’t want to make a caricature out of the characters because they are not comedians in the film. They are the main protagonists. It’s the most challenging film I’ve done as far as the locations and circumstances in which we were shooting is concerned.

We shot action sequences in 45-50 nights while it was raining. The idea was not to create a cliché double role where one character is good and the other is evil. We were trying to achieve this subtle difference between the two, which is more difficult to create than the basic large-in-your-face differences.

Conceptualizing the two characters was very difficult because we didn’t have any reference point besides their speech defects.

Rajeev Masand: Which of the two speech impairments were more difficult to get used to?

Shahid Kapoor: Both were quite difficult. The thing with the lisping was about learning the lines, as I couldn’t go wrong even once and that was the challenge. But I would say the stammering was more difficult as it takes time to make it your own.

Rajeev Masand: Kaminey has been slapped with an Adult certificate, which is odd as I wonder what it could have which is more adult in nature than Kambakkht Ishq which was given a U/A certificate?

Shahid Kapoor: We were very surprised and disappointed and did feel like we were treated more strictly as compared to a lot of other films which have come out. There is no abusive language in the film at all.

Rajeev Masand: Except for the title of the film which you have legitimized?

Shahid Kapoor: Well that is debatable as it depends on the usage of the word Kaminey. But in the film, it’s been used with a comic undertone. But the logic given to us was the violence in the film. However, honestly, I’ve seen a lot more violent films in the last one-year which were given the U/A certificate. So I was very surprised and disappointed. I’ve shown the film to my family and they didn’t find anything wrong with it either.

Rajeev Masand: What did you think of Love Aaj Kal, it’s been directed by Imtiaz Ali who directed you in Jab We Met?

Shahid Kapoor: Unfortunately, I haven’t seen it yet. But I would really like to see it and am looking forward to seeing it. I have a lot of expectations from it as I think Imtiaz is one of the most talented people I’ve worked with.

Rajeev Masand: The general consensus is that, though it’s a bigger hit, it’s not as good as Jab We Met?

Shahid Kapoor: I’ve heard a lot of mixed reactions but I feel Jab We Met is a film that happens and people shouldn’t put that pressure on Imtiaz. It’s very difficult to live up to a film like Jab We Met, though as a director, in the long run, I’m sure he will prove to be better than what people judge him on the basis of Jab We Met to be.

That kind of films doesn’t come every day, even as an actor I’ll be fortunate if I get one or two more love stories as good as Jab We Met. Some films just become very memorable and Jab We Met has become one of those films.

Rajeev Masand: There have been mixed reactions to the promos of your next film Dil Bole Hadippa with Rani Mukherjee, it seems to be a back-to-your-Punjabi-roots Yash Raj movie?

Shahid Kapoor: Yes, it’s bang-on that. It’s absolutely the opposite of Kaminey, which is what I’m happy about that both the films are coming out around the same time and are totally different. It’s a fun film. I would tell people to carry their brains when they come to see Kaminey and leave their brains at home when they come to see Dil Bole Hadippa.

Rajeev Masand: What was it like working with Rani in the film, especially since you worked with her before you were an actor on a Pepsi commercial?

Shahid Kapoor: Yes, in fact, I kept teasing her on how I was a model and she this big star and I’m getting to act with her. She used to get really annoyed. She says you’re my hero now so behave like a hero.

The thing with Rani is that she is a genuinely complete heroine. She’s a great dancer and a fine actor and is in the best shape ever for this film, she’s really worked very hard. I had fun working with her but didn’t feel like I was working with a contemporary, obviously. She made me feel very comfortable and it was more of a learning process for me because she’s worked with so many stars that I’ve looked up to. So just working with her was a great experience in itself.

Rajeev Masand: Every single fan of yours is very concerned about your single status. You have been linked to Sania Mirza, Amrita Rao and now Priyanka Chopra. It seems they really just want to hook you up?

Shahid Kapoor: I feel people think I’m a very sweet guy, so let’s just get him married and settled. But I’m in no hurry when love has to happen it will happen.

Rajeev Masand: Why don’t you just put everyone out of their misery and tell them the name of your girlfriend, why this sudden secrecy?

Shahid Kapoor: Maybe at some stage when I have reached that point of comfort I will talk about my personal life. I wouldn’t really make an effort to hide it. I had a really public break-up and it can come in the way of your normal day-to-day life, it becomes too large to manage. So, that is the reason I became really private and will stay that way.

Rajeev Masand: So are you pretending you are single now?

Shahid Kapoor: Well, if you are saying I’m pretending then there isn’t much I can say about it.

Rajeev Masand: Let me just ask you point-blank then, are you and Priyanka Chopra together?

Shahid Kapoor: No comment. Aren’t you guys tired of asking me the same question? Don’t you get bored of the regular inane answers that you guys get? It’s my life, my status, my thing, so I don’t need to talk about it.

Rajeev Masand: Kareena Kapoor was quoted in an interview saying ‘I wish Shahid would move on’ this was an insinuation that you had been panting stories about Saif Ali Khan and her. What is your reaction to that?

Shahid Kapoor: I don’t have the time to do all that stuff. I’m pretty busy with the work that I’m doing. I genuinely from my heart wish her all the best in life. I hope she stops thinking about this stuff and stays happy in the place that she is in. I wish her happiness wherever she is and I think she should focus on that. She’s a fine actress and is doing some great work and there is a lot to look forward to for her. I honestly don’t choose to react to these kinds of things because I’m very happy where I am and I’m pretty content.

Ever since the day we went our own ways I never spoke about it and I would choose not to as that would be the right thing to do. And I would continue not reacting to this as it would only end up getting dirty and won’t be nice.

Rajeev Masand: Were you surprised that someone you knew so well and closely was willing to believe the worst about you?

Shahid Kapoor: Nothing surprises me anymore. I always choose to remember somebody on the basis of my experiences with them. But I guess each person does what they need to do on their own and that is their life and their decisions.

Rajeev Masand: People have great memories of Jab We Met, could you work with her again?

Shahid Kapoor: The politically correct answer would be ‘yes of course if a film comes our way we will do it’, but it will be very difficult. However, as an actor, I’m a professional and if I’m asked as a professional decision on this, I would say that if my director believes that she is the best person to cast in the film, I would not tell them not to.

Rajeev Masand: They say friends can be lovers, can lovers be friends?

Shahid Kapoor: It’s difficult. It depends on a lot of things, on how you parted and the circumstances you are in now. It depends on the people who you are with now are comfortable with your being friends with someone you used to be with. It’s difficult but not impossible. Kudos to someone who can do that. But it’s difficult and it would be easier to say yes than to go ahead and do it.
