He has also worked as a record producer and collaborated with other artists. Wood was born in Birmingham, England, and grew up in nearby Walsall. He began playing the guitar at the age of 12 and soon formed his first band, The Falcons. He later joined The Move, which had a string of hit singles and albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He then formed Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) in 1972, and the band had a string of hits in the 1970s and 1980s. He also formed the band Wizzard in 1972, and the band had a string of hits in the 1970s. Wood has released several solo albums, including Mustard (1975), Boulders (1977), and On the Road Again (1979). Roy Wood formed the Electric Light Orchestra in 1971, as the Move band was winding down. Before Jeff Lynne took over as the group's driving force, Wood was the one who added the classical music pieces to the songs. He did this by recording the pieces individually.

Roy went on to form "Electric Light Orchestra" with Jeff Lynne with a view to creating pop songs with classical overtones. His membership of ELO was however short-lived and he went on to form another band called "Wizzard". Their first hit single "Ball Park Incident" reached No. 4 in the UK charts, and was followed by two consecutive No.
