Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Ponte Palacios y Blanco, also known as El Libertador, is a Venezuelan military and political leader who has ruled the countries of today, Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador., Peru and Panama gained independence from the Spanish Empire. Bolívar was born in Caracas into a well-to-do family and as is customary for the heirs of elite families of his time, sent abroad to study as a child, in Spain at the age of 16, then moved to France. Taking advantage of the unrest in Spain caused by the Peninsular War, Bolívar launched a campaign for independence in 1808.
