Steve Garvey grew up in Tampa, Florida, where he started practising for both baseball and football at the same time. He enrolled at Michigan State University after graduating from Chamberlain High School, where he continued to play both sports; however, he quickly chose to focus on baseball, which he excelled at to the point that his jersey number 10 was retired in 2014. Steve’s professional baseball career started in the mid-1980s, when he was chosen in the first round of the 1968 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made his debut the following season and quickly proved that he was the genuine thing. He began his career at third base before moving to first base in 1973 after Wes Parker retired. Together with Davey Lopes, a second baseman, Ron Cey, a third baseman, and Bill Russell, a shortstop, he formed the most lasting infield in baseball history. Steve received the NL MVP title in 1974, and the League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award in 1978, when the club beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Championship Series. He was a member of the Dodgers until 1982, at which time his net worth skyrocketed.
