Thomas Earl Petty is an American singer, songwriter, songwriter, record producer and actor. He is the singer and lead guitarist of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, founded in 1976. He previously led the Mudcrutch group and was also a member of the Traveling Wilburys supergroup in the late 1980s. Petty has recorded several hit singles with Heartbreakers and as a solo artist. His hit singles with Heartbreakers include "Don't Do Me Like That", "Refugee", "The Waiting", "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Learning to Fly". Petty's hit solo singles include "I W the Back Down", "Free Fallin '" and "You Don't Know How It Feels". During his career, he has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Petty and the Heartbreakers was introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Petty died of an accidental drug overdose on October 2, 2017, a week after Heartbreakers' 40th anniversary tour ended.
